If you're planning on sharing music, you're welcome to do so here, or if you want people to follow you elsewhere (like on YouTube or SoundCloud, or even FAWM!) please leave a comment! I'm not sure if I'll be writing this year but I'd be happy to listen along at least. My username is the same over on FAWM. :)

Best of February to all of you! And if you know of people who are still on LJ who are doing FAWM, you're welcome to pull 'em over in this direction. The more the merrier!

let the song-writing begin
I tried to stay up and write last night but had a bad case of the sleepies. It was a struggle. At midnight (PST) I clicked on my profile page saw the site still didn't allow posting or anything because it's actually on some timezone that opened the site to uploads 3 or 4 hours after that. I gave up and went to sleep but I do see that the website is live now!

Does anyone know if we can subscribe to this FAWMcast via iTunes?

Just wanted to note that I've passed the role of maintainership of this community over to coffeechica. She's certain to do a much better job with it than I am. :)

Hey FAWM 2011! Welcome & and Intros
Hello 2011 FAWM-ers!

Are you ready? I'm...not. :) But I wanted to get this community posting again, and post this link over on the forums in case we could pull in some more people who do LJ along with FAWM.

SO. Since we are on LJ, let's do the old-fashioned LJ survey-style for those of you who are participating.

What name should we call you?
What is your FAWM username?
Ever play FAWM before?
If so, what is your favorite part of FAWM-ing?
If no, what brought you to FAWM?
What is your goal this February? Why FAWM?
What sort of music do you typically write?
What are your primary musical instruments?
Tell us at least one fact about yourself that has absolutely nothing to do with FAWM.

Finally: got a sample of past-FAWM to share? I do but I have to find it. (And then maybe obsessively re-record it a few times...)

FAWM 2010
I have 8 hours and 38 minutes to go (PST) before FAWM starts.

Here's the official FAWM group on Facebook if you want to connect with others there. Have fun!

I'm so grateful I finally have something to record myself. This year should be memorable.

3 Days 14 hours till FAWM 2008
Is everyone ready?

Does anybody have any strategies to share w/ a newbie?

I'm gearing up here by organizing my spare room/studio and putting away all other hobbies that might derail me from the goal!!

Cheers Blub!

Bad community maintainer! Bad!
I'm really sorry I haven't been participating in this community much. I always intended to but a lot of things have happened in the past few months. I only managed to get two songs done in FAWM, actually.

I promise I'll take more interest in this community than I have been so far. I was actually pleasantly surprised that so many people joined - welcome! It's good to see you. :)

I guess I should probably introduce myself, as I haven't even done that myself yet.

I'm Ciaran, and I'm 23 years old, going on 16. ;p I love creating music, and I appreciate music of almost any sort. I heard about FAWM last year; I can't exactly remember when, but it seemed like an awesome idea and one that I could probably do. So I signed up to be notified when the new site was live.

Most of my songs are composed exclusively on computer by myself only; I use a MIDI sequencer called Cakewalk Professional 6.0 (which is ancient by today's standards, but hey, it does the job admirably), and my Yamaha PSR-9000 synth.

As for the songs I wrote during FAWM, here are the two complete songs I made:

* http://matrix.theblob.org/fawm/01-ragtime.mp3 - obviously, this is a ragtime type of tune. I haven't done ragtime before, so it was an interesting start.

* http://matrix.theblob.org/fawm/02-keepitmovin.mp3 - named after the driving drumline that crops up in the song, which seems to keep everything moving along. Not really sure how to classify it in terms of genre.

I also did a practice tune before FAWM actually started to test myself on whether I could make a complete song in a day. I ended up making a pretty nice reggae tune. The tune doesn't count, of course, but if you want to hear it it's at http://matrix.theblob.org/music/mp3/noproblem.mp3 .

If you've uploaded your tunes, why not post them here? I'd love to hear what everybody else did this year.

Also, a related discussion - when it's not FAWM, what do we want this community to be used for? General music-creation things, perhaps with a view to doing songs quickly? It's your community, so please do pitch in.

Thanks, and I'm sorry again about not being around. I'll do better from now on. :D

rhymes!?
I'm not normally one for bothering with rhymes, but this one needs it... and I'm stuck. I've checked several rhyming dictionaries, online and off, and the only words that rhyme with 'bush,' that aren't 'push,' is 'Hindu Kush.'

Normally I'd go, OK, I'll try it, but 'Hindu Kush' was recently used by Katie Melua, so I can't. GRRR!

By the time any of you reply, I'd have worked something out, rhyming or not, so meh. Hey to you all anyway!

Nearly there...
Nearly here, should be a good laugh.

Also, some good has come of it already, I've started tidying my rooms (which is a mammoth task) so that I have a better space in which to create and not fall over things.

Anyone else making preparations and getting excited?

Hey hey.
Hey hey everyone... I've joined up to FAWM, looking forward to February... I've had not so much a writer's block as a recorder's block the past year... everything I've worked on I've decided isn't up to scratch, so for the first time since I began releasing EPs and albums under the 'luna spark' name, I went a whole year without a new proper release... it's awesome to think I'll have a new album out at the end of February :p http://lunaspark.muzic.net.nz

Welcome!
Welcome to the FAWM LiveJournal community!

Technically, this isn't an official community for FAWM. However, I've been in contact with the organisers and they're happy for me to create this, so here it is.

What is FAWM?
FAWM - the February Album Writing Month - is a rather fun event in the same sort of league as NaNoWriMo and other such ideas. The aim is to write 14 songs in 28 days. FAWM takes itself a little more seriously than NaNoWriMo and other similar projects, though; one of the aims is to encourage your songwriting potential. Having said that, don't aim for perfection in every song. As stated in last year's FAQ:
If you make it to 14 songs, probably 2-3 will be stellar, 2-3 will be abysmal, and the rest will be varying degrees of good. We take this a little more seriously than other blitzkrieg art projects, but not too seriously. If you feel you've written a mediocre song, just hammer it out and move on, but don't give up on it. A salvageable line or melody may still come out of it.
What's this community for?
This community is for anybody interested in FAWM and the challenge it represents, whether or not you're actually going to take part. I'm hoping that through this community, we can encourage each other and share ideas.

If FAWM is only in February, this community's going to be inactive a lot. Can I post links to music I've done outside of February or bring up topics related tangentially to FAWM?
I don't see why not. Having said that, of course, this is only a new community so we'll need to see how it goes.

I'm interested in joining the community. What should I do?
Just join it. There's no application process or anything for this community. An introduction post would be nice, of course, if you plan to be an active member of the community. The main thing is that you enjoy and challenge yourself, knowing that you're not the only one out there doing this!

Have fun, and enjoy the community!
